About IAL Grades

IAL Grades is a free tool for Pearson Edexcel International A level students. It converts past-paper raw marks into UMS, predicts your unit grades from the papers you practise, and works out the UMS each remaining unit needs for the overall grade you want.

Where the boundaries come from

Every conversion uses the raw-mark grade boundaries Pearson publishes after each exam series. The site currently covers every IAL subject from June 2023 to June 2026 (January, June and October series). Series before June 2023 used pandemic-adjusted boundaries that are much lower than today’s, so they aren’t included.

How raw marks become UMS

Each unit has a fixed UMS scale. For a 100-UMS unit, an A is always 80 UMS, a B 70, a C 60, a D 50 and an E 40, and A2 units also publish an A* point at 90. Units worth 60, 80, 120, 140 or 300 UMS use the same percentages. Pearson sets the raw mark needed for each of those points per series, and marks in between are scaled in a straight line.

Example: P3 (WMA13), June 2025. A = 57 raw (80 UMS), A* = 63 raw (90 UMS).
A raw mark of 60 gives 80 + (60 − 57) × 10 ÷ 6 = 85 UMS.

How the overall grade is worked out

Your qualification grade comes from the total UMS of its units: 80% of the maximum for an A, 70% for a B, and so on down to 40% for an E. An A* needs an overall A plus 90% of the UMS available on the A2 units. Mathematics checks P3 + P4 (180 of 200), and Further Mathematics checks your best three A2 units (270 of 300).

Predictions

Predictions are a weighted average of your most recent papers, with the latest counting most. The likely range shows how much your scores vary. Practice at home usually scores a little higher than the real exam, so plan around the low end.
